IAMHIST conference 2009: Social Fears and Moral Panics
Aberystwyth, 8-11 July 2009




The International Association for Media and History (IAMHIST) is pleased to announce its XXIII biennial conference, incorporating the 3rd Gregynog Media History Conference, on the theme Social Fears and Moral Panics, to be held at Aberystwyth University Wed 8-Sat 11 July 2009.

The conference will explore the role of the media in addressing, highlighting or perpetuating social fears, and the mass media itself as a perceived moral agent and/or threat.  Topics to be addressed during the conference include crime; censorship; government and media; women and moral panics; the underclass; race; empire; disease; the environment; cultural fears; 'enemies within'; Cold War fears; audiences and moral panic; new media; and social fears and financial crisis.


Confirmed speakers include Martin Barker, Virginia Berridge, James Chapman, Steve Chibnall, Chas Crichter, Nicholas Cull, Mark Glancy, David Hendy, Michele Hilmes, Aled Jones, Merfyn Jones (former BBC Governor for Wales), Jason McElligott, Edward Mirzeoff, Julian Petley, Laurence Rees (Timewatch; The Nazis: A Warning From History), Sir Quentin Thomas (President, British Board of Film Classification), Will Wyatt.

The conference is being organised by IAMHIST, in association with the Centre for Media History and Departments of History and Welsh History, and Theatre, Film and Television, Aberystwyth University, the Department of Media and Communications, Swansea University, and the journals Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television and Media History, with the support of the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales, National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.
