		 <title> Reminder: AAS Summer Seminar in the History of the Book
</title>
		 <link>http://www.communicationhistory.org/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/commhistlist/20100226144721/</link>
		 <description>

A reminder that March 12, 2010 is the application deadline for the 2010&#60;br&#62;American Antiquarian Society Summer Seminar in the History of the Book in&#60;br&#62;American Culture, whose topic will be &#34;The Global American South and Early&#60;br&#62;American Print Culture.&#34; The seminar will run from Monday, June 14 through&#60;br&#62;Friday, June 18, 2010, at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, MA.&#60;br&#62;Details about the seminar, along with application forms, are available at&#60;br&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;http://www.americanantiquarian.org/sumsem10.htm&#34;&#62;http://www.americanantiquarian.org/sumsem10.htm&#60;/a&#62;.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;The seminar will convene a group of 20 graduate students, faculty, and&#60;br&#62;others working in the field of print culture to examine what happens when we&#60;br&#62;view the imagined community of U.S. print culture from the vantage point of&#60;br&#62;the South. At a moment when industrial print culture was consolidating&#60;br&#62;itself in the Northeast, &#34;the South&#34; appeared in print in several registers.&#60;br&#62;While asserting an &#34;American&#34; identity, Southerners represented themselves&#60;br&#62;as a sectional alternative to the nation that boasted a distinctive regional&#60;br&#62;culture while simultaneously celebrating local diversity.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;This seminar will investigate how these complementary practices of national,&#60;br&#62;regional, and local self-definition circulated through the material world of&#60;br&#62;early American print. &#38;nbsp;How were the South's efforts at sectional&#60;br&#62;self-fashioning, its attempt to lay claim to the nation, and its engagements&#60;br&#62;with the wider world mediated through and influenced by the modalities of&#60;br&#62;book distribution, copyright, authorship, and reading in nineteenth-century&#60;br&#62;America? &#38;nbsp;The American Antiquarian Society's unsurpassed holdings of printed&#60;br&#62;material both from and about the South-including newspapers and periodicals,&#60;br&#62;political propaganda, illustrations and photographs, and rich collections of&#60;br&#62;Francophone Louisiana materials-will help us to answer these questions.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Of particular interest to literary scholars and historians, the seminar&#60;br&#62;should also appeal to art historians and legal scholars, as well as those&#60;br&#62;researching the multi-ethnic, cosmopolitan, and transatlantic history and&#60;br&#62;culture of the U.S. The seminar will be led by Jeannine DeLombard and Lloyd&#60;br&#62;Pratt. DeLombard is Associate Professor of English at the University of&#60;br&#62;Toronto. Pratt is Assistant Professor of English at Michigan State&#60;br&#62;University.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Paul J. Erickson&#60;br&#62;Director of Academic Programs&#60;br&#62;American Antiquarian Society&#60;br&#62;508-471-2158

		 <title> CFP: The Making of the Humanities II
</title>
		 <link>http://www.communicationhistory.org/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/commhistlist/20100224120010/</link>
		 <description>

The Making of the Humanities II&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Second International Conference on the History of the Humanities&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;21-23 October 2010, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Goal of the Conference&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;This is the second of a biennially organized conference that brings together&#60;br&#62;scholars and historians of humanities disciplines to draw the outlines for a&#60;br&#62;comparative history of the humanities. Although there exist histories of&#60;br&#62;single humanities disciplines, a comparative history would satisfy a&#60;br&#62;long-felt need, and fill a conspicuous gap in intellectual history.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Theme of the Conference&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;The first highly successful conference, held in 2008, discussed the early&#60;br&#62;modern period. The theme of this year's meeting is From Early Modern to&#60;br&#62;Modern Disciplines, focusing on the period 1600-1900. Topics include all&#60;br&#62;aspects of the history of philology, linguistics, rhetoric, musicology,&#60;br&#62;literary theory, historiography, art history, archeology and other&#60;br&#62;humanities disciplines, with an emphasis on their interrelations. We&#60;br&#62;especially encourage submissions on:&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;* &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Increasing specialization and institutionalization: How did&#60;br&#62;various branches of the humanities develop into modern differentiations&#60;br&#62;between disciplines?&#60;br&#62;* &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Historization of the humanities: How did the historical approach&#60;br&#62;become the leading method underlying the humanities -- from philology to&#60;br&#62;musicology?&#60;br&#62;* &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Humanties vs sciences: How were the humanities positioned with&#60;br&#62;respect to other sciences? Was there a continuing search for patterns and&#60;br&#62;'laws' in the humanities?&#60;br&#62;* &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Interaction between regions: What was the impact of the European&#60;br&#62;humanities on the humanities in China, India and Africa, and vice versa?&#60;br&#62;* &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Rise of canonical figures and themes: How did individual scholars&#60;br&#62;come to be identified with their disciplines? How did certain historical&#60;br&#62;moments or works obtain canonical positions, often in relation to the&#60;br&#62;ideals of cultural nationalism?&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Abstract Submission&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Send an abstract of maximally 400 words to:&#38;nbsp;&#60;a href=&#34;mailto:&#38;#x48;&#38;#105;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x74;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#114;&#38;#x79;&#38;#x48;&#38;#117;&#38;#109;&#38;#97;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#105;&#38;#116;&#38;#105;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x40;&#38;#103;&#38;#109;&#38;#97;&#38;#x69;&#38;#x6C;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#x63;&#38;#111;&#38;#109;&#34;&#62;&#38;#x48;&#38;#105;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x74;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#114;&#38;#x79;&#38;#x48;&#38;#117;&#38;#109;&#38;#97;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#105;&#38;#116;&#38;#105;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x40;&#38;#103;&#38;#109;&#38;#97;&#38;#x69;&#38;#x6C;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#x63;&#38;#111;&#38;#109;&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#38;lt;&#60;a href=&#34;mailto:&#38;#x48;&#38;#105;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x74;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#114;&#38;#x79;&#38;#x48;&#38;#117;&#38;#109;&#38;#97;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#105;&#38;#116;&#38;#105;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x40;&#38;#103;&#38;#109;&#38;#97;&#38;#x69;&#38;#x6C;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#x63;&#38;#111;&#38;#109;&#34;&#62;mailto:&#38;#x48;&#38;#105;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x74;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#114;&#38;#x79;&#38;#x48;&#38;#117;&#38;#109;&#38;#97;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#105;&#38;#116;&#38;#105;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x40;&#38;#103;&#38;#109;&#38;#97;&#38;#x69;&#38;#x6C;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#x63;&#38;#111;&#38;#109;&#60;/a&#62;&#38;gt;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Deadline for abstract submissions: 15 June 2010&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;For more information, see&#38;nbsp;&#60;a href=&#34;http://www.illc.uva.nl/MakingHumanities/2010&#34;&#62;http://www.illc.uva.nl/MakingHumanities/2010&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#38;lt;&#60;a href=&#34;http://www.illc.uva.nl/MakingHumanities/2010&#34;&#62;http://www.illc.uva.nl/MakingHumanities/2010&#60;/a&#62;&#38;gt;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Organization: Rens Bod, Jaap Maat and Thijs Weststeijn (University of&#60;br&#62;Amsterdam)&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

		 <title> Media History Teaching Tips
</title>
		 <link>http://www.communicationhistory.org/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/commhistlist/20100224082623/</link>
		 <description>

For a history panel at the Southeast Colloquium next month and possibly a&#60;br&#62;digital archive, the AJHA Education Committee is collecting tips and ideas&#60;br&#62;on teaching undergraduate media history. In particular, we are looking for&#60;br&#62;ways of engaging undergraduates, especially first-years, in these courses.&#60;br&#62;What approaches, projects, perspectives have worked for you?&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Please share your ideas with colleagues by sending your suggestions to Frank&#60;br&#62;Fee at&#38;nbsp;&#60;a href=&#34;mailto:&#38;#x66;&#38;#x66;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x65;&#38;#64;&#38;#101;&#38;#109;&#38;#x61;&#38;#x69;&#38;#x6C;&#38;#46;&#38;#117;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#x63;&#38;#46;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x64;&#38;#117;&#34;&#62;&#38;#x66;&#38;#x66;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x65;&#38;#64;&#38;#101;&#38;#109;&#38;#x61;&#38;#x69;&#38;#x6C;&#38;#46;&#38;#117;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#x63;&#38;#46;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x64;&#38;#117;&#60;/a&#62;. History Division&#60;br&#62;Call for Papers and Reviewers&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;The History Division invites submissions of original research papers&#60;br&#62;on the history of journalism and mass communication for the AEJMC 2010&#60;br&#62;convention in Denver. All research methodologies are welcome, as are papers&#60;br&#62;on all aspects of media history.&#60;br&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Papers will be evaluated on originality of importance of topic;&#60;br&#62;literature review; clarity of research purpose; focus; use of original and&#60;br&#62;primary sources and how they support the paper’s purpose and conclusions;&#60;br&#62;and the degree to which the paper contributes to the field of journalism and&#60;br&#62;mass communication history.&#60;br&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Papers should be no more than 7,500 words, or about 25 double-spaced&#60;br&#62;pages, not including notes. Multiple submissions to the Division are not&#60;br&#62;allowed and only one paper per author will be accepted for presentation in&#60;br&#62;the History Division’s research sessions. Authors should also submit a&#60;br&#62;75-word abstract.&#60;br&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Papers must be electronically submitted using the services of All&#60;br&#62;Academic, Inc., whose website is&#38;nbsp;&#60;a href=&#34;http://www.allacademic.com/&#34;&#62;www.allacademic.com&#60;/a&#62;. The deadline is&#60;br&#62;midnight, April 1, 2010. Authors are encouraged to read the Uniform Paper&#60;br&#62;Call for detailed submission information. The organization’s website is&#60;br&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;http://www.aejmc.org/&#34;&#62;www.aejmc.org&#60;/a&#62;.&#60;br&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Student Papers: Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled during&#60;br&#62;the 2009-10 academic year may enter the Warren Price Student Paper&#60;br&#62;Competition. The Price Award recognizes the History Division’s best student&#60;br&#62;paper and is named for Warren Price, who was the Division’s first chair.&#60;br&#62;Student papers should include a separate cover sheet that indicates their&#60;br&#62;student status but omits the author’s name or other identifying information.&#60;br&#62;Students who submit top papers are eligible for small travel grants from the&#60;br&#62;Edwin Emery Fund. Only full-time students not receiving departmental travel&#60;br&#62;grants are eligible for these grants.&#60;br&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Call for Reviewers: &#38;nbsp;If you are willing to review papers for the&#60;br&#62;History Division research competition, please contact Ann Thorne at&#60;br&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;mailto:&#38;#116;&#38;#x68;&#38;#111;&#38;#114;&#38;#110;&#38;#101;&#38;#64;&#38;#109;&#38;#105;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x73;&#38;#111;&#38;#x75;&#38;#x72;&#38;#105;&#38;#x77;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x73;&#38;#116;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x72;&#38;#110;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#101;&#38;#x64;&#38;#x75;&#34;&#62;&#38;#116;&#38;#x68;&#38;#111;&#38;#114;&#38;#110;&#38;#101;&#38;#64;&#38;#109;&#38;#105;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x73;&#38;#111;&#38;#x75;&#38;#x72;&#38;#105;&#38;#x77;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x73;&#38;#116;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x72;&#38;#110;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#101;&#38;#x64;&#38;#x75;&#60;/a&#62;. &#38;nbsp;We will need approximately 60 reviewers for the&#60;br&#62;competition. &#38;nbsp;Graduate students are not eligible to serve as reviewers and,&#60;br&#62;in general, reviewers should not have submitted their own research into the&#60;br&#62;competition.&#60;br&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Contact information: For more information about the History Division&#60;br&#62;research process, contact Research Chair Ann Thorne at Missouri Western&#60;br&#62;State University. The Program Committee invites paper and panel proposals on any topic in the history of technology, broadly defined. Sessions dealing with non-Western technologies are particularly welcome. Of special interest for 2010 are proposals that engage in themes that resonate with the concerns of the specific locale. These include:&#60;o:p&#62;&#60;/o:p&#62;&#60;/span&#62;&#60;/font&#62;&#60;/div&#62;&#60;div style=&#34;margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; &#34;&#62;&#60;font face=&#34;Times New Roman&#34; size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;&#60;span style=&#34;font-size: 12pt; &#34;&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;o:p&#62;&#60;/o:p&#62;&#60;/span&#62;&#60;/font&#62;&#60;/div&#62;&#60;div style=&#34;margin-top: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; &#34;&#62;&#60;b&#62;&#60;font face=&#34;Times New Roman&#34; size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;&#60;span style=&#34;font-size: 12pt; font-weight: bold; &#34;&#62;Consumption:&#60;/span&#62;&#60;/font&#62;&#60;/b&#62;&#38;nbsp;In the popular imagination, the Tacoma-Seattle area is associated with several important corporate entities (Boeing, Microsoft, Nintendo, Starbucks, etc.) whose goods and services are deeply embedded in global consumer culture. At a moment in time when consumption, sometimes excessive, sometimes globalized, sometimes exploitative, is of great concern to both the public and policy-makers,&#38;nbsp;&#60;st1:city w:st=&#34;on&#34;&#62;&#60;st1:place w:st=&#34;on&#34;&#62;Tacoma&#60;/st1:place&#62;&#60;/st1:city&#62;&#38;nbsp;is an appropriate place for historians to (re)consider technologies of consumption. We are especially interested in papers that see production and consumption as coterminous processes and which historicize consumption as part of broader processes in the history of technology. <description>

Call for Papers&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#34;Contained Memory&#34;&#60;br&#62;Multidisciplinary Conference&#60;br&#62;School of Visual and Material Culture, Massey University&#60;br&#62;Wellington (New Zealand)&#60;br&#62;9-11 December 2010&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;__________________________________________________&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;The Contained Memory Conference 2010 seeks to bring together&#60;br&#62;multidisciplinary perspectives in a discourse on contained memory.&#60;br&#62;While memory is understood to be integral to the constitution of the&#60;br&#62;self, it works in concert with external repositories of memory&#60;br&#62;ranging from personal mnemonic objects to collective, social, and&#60;br&#62;public memory residing in community traditions, artifacts in museums,&#60;br&#62;and archives, including electronic and other recording systems.&#60;br&#62;Memory is embodied in intergenerational rituals and practices and&#60;br&#62;intangible forms of storytelling, song, and performance, as well as&#60;br&#62;in natural elements and the physical memory forms of monuments and&#60;br&#62;memorials.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Although there are distinct ways of thinking about or containing&#60;br&#62;memory, the edges of containment are porous, enabling encounters&#60;br&#62;between different expressions of memory. By encompassing a wide&#60;br&#62;variety of ways of conceiving memory through different cultural and&#60;br&#62;theoretical orientations and disciplinary backgrounds, it is hoped&#60;br&#62;this conference can build a nexus of contained memories. Papers may&#60;br&#62;originate from a variety of knowledge sources including (but not&#60;br&#62;limited to): anthropology, archeology, art history/criticism,&#60;br&#62;communication studies, cultural studies, customary knowledge,&#60;br&#62;ethnography, film/video studies, fine/visual art, history, geography,&#60;br&#62;landscape architecture, literary theory, material culture studies,&#60;br&#62;memory studies, museum studies, musicology, neuroscience,&#60;br&#62;neuropsychology, performance/theatre, philosophy, photography,&#60;br&#62;psychoanalysis, psychology, rhetorical studies, sociology, and visual&#60;br&#62;culture studies.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Possible Contained Memory sessions:&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;The Land / Earth / Landscape:&#60;br&#62;- The expression of memory in personified land and landscape&#60;br&#62;features; cultural erasure and renaissance&#60;br&#62;- Diaspora: the threat of memory loss following migration and the&#60;br&#62;preservation of intergenerational memory expressed physically&#60;br&#62;through photographs, diaries, and artifacts, and the intangible or&#60;br&#62;ephemeral qualities of dance, theatre, and songs from “home”&#60;br&#62;- Sites of trauma&#60;br&#62;- Genealogy / whakapapa&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Containing public memory:&#60;br&#62;- Museums, records, archives, memorials, oral histories and mnemonic&#60;br&#62;devices&#60;br&#62;- Transmission, preservation, mutability of memory&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Rituals of memory:&#60;br&#62;- Enacting / performing of memory “acts”&#60;br&#62;- Mimetic performance&#60;br&#62;- Narratives, mythology / folklore, and cosmologies&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Site / Space / Time:&#60;br&#62;- Bodily memory expressed through performance and ritual&#60;br&#62;- Interaction between the present and the past&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Memory and the senses:&#60;br&#62;- Phenomenology of the senses&#60;br&#62;- Music / sound&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Autobiography:&#60;br&#62;- Externalization of personal memory in art forms&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;The human mind:&#60;br&#62;- The nature of memory and the definition of self; cognitive&#60;br&#62;neuroscience and neuropsychology&#60;br&#62;- Psychoanalysis; forgetting as a means of suppressing trauma or&#60;br&#62;facilitating cultural destruction, annihilation, or oblivion&#60;br&#62;- Trauma, dementia, the mutability and fragility of memory&#60;br&#62;- The mind and digital memory&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Because of the geographic location of the conference it is envisaged&#60;br&#62;that some papers will respond to contained memory in Aotearoa New&#60;br&#62;Zealand and the Pacific.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;The Contained Memory Conference invites papers for competitive&#60;br&#62;selection by an international peer review panel.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;If you wish to submit an abstract for the Contained Memory&#60;br&#62;Conference, please email:&#60;br&#62;- title of your paper&#60;br&#62;- a 250 word abstract&#60;br&#62;- a brief biography (a few sentences)&#60;br&#62;to Kingsley Baird at:&#38;nbsp;&#60;a href=&#34;mailto:&#38;#107;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#x77;&#38;#46;&#38;#98;&#38;#97;&#38;#105;&#38;#114;&#38;#x64;&#38;#64;&#38;#109;&#38;#97;&#38;#115;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x65;&#38;#121;&#38;#46;&#38;#97;&#38;#x63;&#38;#46;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#122;&#34;&#62;&#38;#107;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#x77;&#38;#46;&#38;#98;&#38;#97;&#38;#105;&#38;#114;&#38;#x64;&#38;#64;&#38;#109;&#38;#97;&#38;#115;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x65;&#38;#121;&#38;#46;&#38;#97;&#38;#x63;&#38;#46;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#122;&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Please give the email the subject ‘Contained Memory abstract - your&#60;br&#62;surname’. <title> CFP: Fiske Matters: John Fiske's Continuing Legacy for Cultural Studies

		 <description>

&#60;b&#62;Fiske Matters: &#38;nbsp;John Fiske's Continuing Legacy for Cultural Studies&#60;/b&#62;&#60;div&#62;&#60;br&#62;Madison, Wisconsin&#60;br&#62;June 11-12, 2010&#38;nbsp;&#60;br&#62;Call for Papers&#38;nbsp;&#60;/div&#62;&#60;div&#62;&#60;br&#62;From the late 1970s through the 1990s, John Fiske was one of the most influential media scholars in the world. &#38;nbsp;Books such as Reading Television (co-written with John Hartley in 1978), Television Culture (1987), Understanding Popular Culture (1989), Power Plays, Power Works (1993) and Media Matters (1994) proved seminal to the developing fields of media and cultural studies. &#38;nbsp;His work prompted generations of scholars to consider how media culture shaped our collective understanding of the operations of power, particularly in relation to issues of raced, classed, and gendered identities. &#38;nbsp;And his work on reception led to intense debates over how to theorize the activity of media audiences. &#38;nbsp;As a teacher and advisor, Fiske provided dynamic intellectual critiques of the work his students and colleagues produced, and encouraged an interrogation of the media environment that was remarkable in its accessibility.&#38;nbsp;&#60;/div&#62;&#60;div&#62;&#60;br&#62;Fiske retired from academic life ten years ago. To honor the tenth anniversary of Fiske's retirement from the field, and to explore both the continuing impact of his ideas and the profundity of the era in which he and his contemporaries operated, we are proud to announce a conference titled &#34;Fiske Matters: John Fiske's Continuing Legacy for Cultural Studies.&#34; &#38;nbsp;The conference will feature Henry Jenkins as a keynote speaker, and Fiske himself is expected to attend.&#38;nbsp;&#60;/div&#62;&#60;div&#62;&#60;br&#62;Given the dramatic changes that have occurred in our media culture in the decade since his retirement, one might wonder whether Fiske's work remains relevant. We firmly believe it does, but we also believe the field would benefit from a careful assessment of just how his ideas can help us better understand what's going on in our current moment. Thus, the conference seeks to explore the continuing relevance of Fiske's work and to examine the intellectual heritage of and influences upon his work. &#38;nbsp;We invite individual papers and/or panels that build upon and/or adapt Fiske's scholarship and approach to contemporary ends, consider the reception of Fiske's work, and assess the current and future utility of his work and other related scholarship for media and cultural studies. &#38;nbsp;Paper and/or panel topics may address the impact and relevance of Fiske's work in the following areas:&#38;nbsp;&#60;/div&#62;&#60;div&#62;&#60;br&#62;*&#60;span class=&#34;Apple-tab-span&#34; style=&#34;white-space: pre; &#34;&#62;	&#60;/span&#62;Feminism&#60;br&#62;*&#60;span class=&#34;Apple-tab-span&#34; style=&#34;white-space: pre; &#34;&#62;	&#60;/span&#62;Audiences and reception studies&#60;br&#62;*&#60;span class=&#34;Apple-tab-span&#34; style=&#34;white-space: pre; &#34;&#62;	&#60;/span&#62;Cultural politics&#60;br&#62;*&#60;span class=&#34;Apple-tab-span&#34; style=&#34;white-space: pre; &#34;&#62;	&#60;/span&#62;Race and culture&#60;br&#62;*&#60;span class=&#34;Apple-tab-span&#34; style=&#34;white-space: pre; &#34;&#62;	&#60;/span&#62;Cultural studies in (inter)national contexts&#60;br&#62;*&#60;span class=&#34;Apple-tab-span&#34; style=&#34;white-space: pre; &#34;&#62;	&#60;/span&#62;Textualities&#60;br&#62;*&#60;span class=&#34;Apple-tab-span&#34; style=&#34;white-space: pre; &#34;&#62;	&#60;/span&#62;Popular pleasures&#60;br&#62;*&#60;span class=&#34;Apple-tab-span&#34; style=&#34;white-space: pre; &#34;&#62;	&#60;/span&#62;Hegemony and resistance&#60;br&#62;*&#60;span class=&#34;Apple-tab-span&#34; style=&#34;white-space: pre; &#34;&#62;	&#60;/span&#62;Cultural studies in the 1980s and 1990s&#60;br&#62;*&#60;span class=&#34;Apple-tab-span&#34; style=&#34;white-space: pre; &#34;&#62;	&#60;/span&#62;Economic and cultural capital&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Other topics are also welcome for consideration. &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#60;br&#62;Conference organizers plan to publish an edited volume of collected papers from the conference.&#38;nbsp;&#60;br&#62;The deadline for submissions of a 500-word abstract for either an individual paper, or for each component of a pre-constituted panel, is 19 January 2010. &#38;nbsp;Please include a one- to two-sentence bio for each contributor to a paper or panel.&#38;nbsp;&#60;br&#62;Please submit abstracts to&#38;nbsp;&#60;a href=&#34;http://www.fiskematters.com/submissions&#34;&#62;www.fiskematters.com/submissions&#60;/a&#62;. &#38;nbsp;For more information on the conference, please visit the conference website:&#38;nbsp;&#60;a href=&#34;http://www.fiskematters.com/&#34;&#62;http://www.fiskematters.com/&#60;/a&#62;.&#38;nbsp;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;Elana Levine&#60;br&#62;Associate Professor&#60;br&#62;Department of Journalism and Mass Communication&#60;br&#62;University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee&#60;br&#62;2522 E. We invite a broad range of scholarship touching on the concerns of the collections here at Madison, and particularly invite those whose work has brought them here to consult our papers, films, recordings, and graphic materials in the course of their work. Equally important are considerations of archiving popular, aural, and visual culture. &#38;nbsp;We invite presentations of historical work&#38;nbsp; and contemporary work with roots in the historical&#38;nbsp;
